How to measure your feet
You need a sheet of paper, a pencil and a ruler. Measure both feet while standing and use the longer measurement.
Wear the socks or hosiery you plan to wear with the shoes. Measuring later in the day can help account for normal changes in foot size.
How to measure your feet
- Place a sheet of paper on a hard, level floor with one edge against a wall. Wear the socks you plan to wear with the shoes.
- Stand with your heel gently against the wall and your weight on the foot. Have someone mark the end of your longest toe, keeping the pencil upright.
- Measure from the wall edge to the mark in centimetres. Repeat for your other foot and use the longer measurement. Measuring towards the end of the day can be helpful.
Only compare this measurement with a chart labelled foot length. An insole or shoe measurement may include extra space and is not interchangeable. Do not add an allowance unless that brand’s instructions specifically say to.
Length is only part of the fit
A width letter or fit label is specific to the brand and style. Do not assume that the same letter means the same fit across every brand.
- Forefoot
Toes can move and the widest part of your foot feels comfortable, without squeezing at the sides.
- Instep
The top of your foot feels secure without tight pressure. Adjust laces or straps where available.
- Heel
Your heel sits securely as you walk, without persistent slipping or rubbing.
When your shoes arrive
- Try both shoes indoors with your usual socks or hosiery. If you use your own insoles, check that the shoe is suitable for them.
- Set adjustable laces, straps or buckles with your foot in the shoe. On lace-and-zip styles, the laces set the fit and the zip helps with access.
- Walk a few steps. Your toes should not press against the front, the forefoot should feel comfortable, and your heel should stay held.
If the length seems right but the sides or instep pinch, a different width or shape may help more than a longer size. Do not rely on painful shoes stretching to fit.
