  • How to Wear Ankle Boots with Jeans, Trousers and Dresses

    5 min read

Marco Tozzi burgundy suede-effect block heel ankle boots styled with a cream knitted dress

Autumn outfit ideas · Leavys Shoes

A good pair of ankle boots can work with much of what you already own. The useful part is knowing where your jeans should finish, which boot shape sits neatly under trousers and how to bring dresses into cooler weather.

Here are a few easy combinations to try, with styles from our Jana, Caprice, Tamaris and Marco Tozzi collections. Start with your favourite outfit, then choose a boot that suits both the look and your feet.

    01 · EVERYDAY

    Denim and brown leather

Straight-leg jeans, a cream knit and chocolate brown Chelsea boots.

    02 · SMARTER DAYS

    Trousers and a neat heel

Charcoal trousers, a soft blouse and black stretch ankle boots.

    03 · A LITTLE COLOUR

    A dress and burgundy

A knitted or printed dress with burgundy boots and a simple coat.

How to wear ankle boots with jeans

Straight-leg jeans: let the hem sit naturally

Try a hem that finishes just above the boot, or one that falls comfortably over the top. What matters is that it does not catch and bunch around the ankle. A small turn-up can help when your jeans are slightly too long.

Chocolate brown leather works particularly well with blue denim, cream knitwear and a camel coat. Our Jana chocolate brown Chelsea boots bring that combination together, with an H wide fitting and a 4 cm block heel.

Wide-leg jeans: give the fabric room

Let wide legs fall over the boot, with enough clearance to keep the hem off the ground. Try the jeans and boots together before deciding on the length: a different heel height can change where the fabric falls.

A chunkier boot adds a more casual finish. The Tamaris black leather Chelsea boots have a taller shaft and substantial sole, so they also work when a cropped hem leaves more of the boot on show.

Prefer slim or skinny jeans? Try them tucked into a roomier boot opening, or finishing above it. Avoid forcing several folds of denim inside a close-fitting shaft. A small change to the hem often makes the outfit feel much tidier.

How to wear ankle boots with trousers

For work, dinner or a smarter everyday outfit, a neat ankle boot is an easy partner for tailored trousers. A slim shaft can sit smoothly underneath the fabric, while a block heel adds a little height.

With cropped trousers, show the boot deliberately rather than leaving a hem that catches halfway down the shaft. With full-length trousers, check that the fabric falls freely and does not drag behind the heel.

Try charcoal trousers, a cream blouse and black boots, or bring in colour with navy trousers and burgundy boots. The Caprice black stretch ankle boots have a softly ruched textile upper and a 6 cm block heel for a dressier finish.

How to wear ankle boots with dresses and skirts

Ankle boots make it easy to keep wearing dresses as the weather cools. A knitted dress is a simple starting point; a printed midi dress works well too, especially when you pick up one of its colours in your boots.

For a coordinated look, try black boots with black tights, or brown boots with chocolate tones. If you prefer contrast, burgundy boots add interest beside cream, navy or charcoal without needing much else in the outfit.

A dressier block heel gives a softer, more polished finish. A chunky Chelsea boot makes the same dress feel more casual. Neither needs a particular dress length: try the combination in a mirror and see how the hem, tights and boot opening work together.

An easy autumn outfit: a cream knitted dress, Marco Tozzi burgundy ankle boots and a long coat. Add tights when you want more warmth, keeping the rest of the colours simple so the boots stand out.

    The brown leather Chelsea

Rounded toes, smooth leather and an elasticated outer panel give this pair a classic shape. An inside zip makes them straightforward to put on.

Try with: blue straight-leg jeans, a cream jumper and a camel coat. They are also a good colour match for an olive or oatmeal knitted dress.

A suede-effect textile upper and gently squared toe give these boots a clean shape. They have an inside zip, FEEL ME cushioning and soft textile lining.

    Before you choose your pair

    • Try your usual outfit with them. Bring together the boots, jeans or dress you plan to wear, rather than judging the boots on their own.
    • Check the fitting and size system. The featured Jana boots are H wide fit; the Caprice style is G fitting. Our Jana sizing guide includes UK, EU and approximate foot-length comparisons in cm and mm.
    • Allow for socks or tights. Try the combination you intend to wear and use our at-home fitting checklist before deciding.
    • Choose for the weather as well as the outfit. A leather upper or chunky sole alone does not mean a boot is waterproof. Check the individual product’s water-protection details if that is a priority.

Common questions about styling ankle boots

Should jeans go inside or outside ankle boots?

Straight and wide legs usually sit more neatly outside. Slim jeans can tuck into a boot if there is enough room, or finish above the opening. Aim for a hem that sits comfortably without bunching.

Can I wear brown boots with black clothes?

Yes. Chocolate brown boots can add warmth to black jeans or a black dress. Try a cream knit, camel coat or brown bag if you want to repeat a warmer tone elsewhere.

Are suede-effect boots made from suede?

Not necessarily. The featured Caprice and Marco Tozzi boots have textile uppers with a suede-effect finish. Check the material before choosing cleaning products, and see our shoe-care guide for more help.
